One Day Without Shoes {2012} + a giveaway (Winner Announced!!!!!)

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2012 One Day Without Shoes event, the movement is still abuzz on social media and I’m glad to have been a part of the great cause. I’m also grateful to everyone who entered the *TOMS* giveaway here at Three 31. I wish I had something to give to each of you, but I’ve got good news for somebody.

The *WINNER* of the *TOMS* giveaway will receive a copy of Blake Mycoskie’s book, Start Something That Matters.

Pancua says:

I’d never heard of TOMS before I entered their giveaway for the Essie nail polish. After entering, I went to the website and read all about the company and their passion to get the movement out to as many people as possible. And if that was not enough, they have some really cute styles that I think hit just about every style out there. I think that is such an awesome idea.

Congratulations, Pancua ~ check your email for a note from me requesting your contact information. I’ll send your book first thing Monday morning.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Tomorrow is the day TOMS raises awareness about the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child’s life. For one day, lots ~ and I mean LOTS ~ of people around the world go barefoot for ONE DAY WITHOUT SHOES. This movement is growing in popularity and the message is loud and clear: a child’s life can be saved with a pair of shoes.

Some people have already uploaded their promotional posters to This is one of my favorites with homemade signs and 40 toes. They have pretty toes. Me? Not so much. Eeek!

I went without shoes in 2011. Now that I’m at school with a strict dress code, I can’t go barefoot. Instead, I will support ODWS by wearing my TOMS.

The reality is sad … millions of children do not have shoes and are exposed to injury and diseases, plus many are denied an education because they own no shoes.

During my trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, I learned that children must have the proper uniform and shoes before they can enroll for school. For many families, this is simply too much to afford.

TOMS shoes has a simple mission: One for One. It’s a genius concept that has proved its vitality. Chief shoe-giver (that’s a humble way of saying CEO) Blake Mycoskie wrote a book, Start Something That Matters (available on Amazon), and I was chosen to be a participant in his Books for Bloggers campaign. I received two copies of his book – one to read and keep in my personal collection and other to give away. One for One continues!

This sounds like a great campaign. Growing up I knew what it was like for my parents to not be able to afford a new pair of shoes. Most summers all 6 of us kids went barefoot, which in the south is a common thing. Back then we went to the grocery stores or anywhere else without them.. Not any for school we had to have shoes to wear. I remember the one year, (probably our worst year financially for my family) mom had to buy my school shoes from the Goodwill store.. They were the ugliest, most gaudy shoes I had ever seen. But I had to wear them. So I know why having a pair of shoes is very important to kids. I would love to have a pair of Toms, would be proud to wear them.

I have never owned a pair of Toms, heck I do not believe I have ever tried a pair on. I have flatt feet so I know with there being no arch support they would kill my chin splints. HOWEVER, I have heard about the company and love their campaign of giving away a free pair of shoes for every pair of Toms that are bought. I am a Scentsy consultant and we live by the motto “Give more than you take.” I wanted to enter this contest for my Step-daughter, she has been wanting a pair of Toms forever. So if I won they would be for her. She deserves so much from me because with her Daddy overseas in Afghanistan she has become my saving grace on a daily basis. She is only twelve and instead of doing what most twelve year olds do, she helps me take care of her three younger brothers and helps me keep up the housework because she know it makes things easier on me. She is a big blessing for me.

Megan, thank you for sharing this story. Your step-daughter is an amazing young woman and I know you must be so proud of her. I like Scentsy’s motto as well, it’s so important to encourage others to be generous in a society that seems to focus so much on me-me-me. What a breath of fresh air you are!!!

I have never owned a pair of Toms or even tried them on, but I think the campaign is an awesome idea!!! We are all guilty of taking things like shoes for granted every day. Not only are other countries struggling to afford shoes, but some of the people we meet on the street are struggling with the same issues. I pray that this campaign raises awareness for others to see the need for these children. I can’t imagine walking every day all day without the blessing of shoes. Thanks for your blogs Nicole and thank you for the blessing that you have been in my life!!!
