Are you ready to MOM UP?

If you’re a Mama and reading this, please do me a huge favor and close your eyes, take a deeeeeeeeep breath (take another one just in case!), and put your hand over your heart. Feel that? Good, now repeat after me:

I am not perfect, but I have a purpose.
I am the daughter of the Most High
and He says I’m worthy, important, and special.
There are many people – including tiny replicas of myself
who call me Mom – who love me, and I cherish them right back.
Whatever season I’m in right now, I embrace it and I am thankful for it.
I’m not perfect but I believe in a Savior who is.
Together, we will do this!

Whew, that was nice! Thank you.

Several months ago, I got an invitation to join a book launch team for Mom Up: Thriving with Grace in the Chaos of Motherhood by Kara-Kae James. While I was familiar with KKJ, I’ll be honest, I was skeptical about the book. There are SO MANY books, blog posts, podcasts, and opinions on motherhood it makes my head swim. Then I got access to the launch team’s online community and realized seven my mom friends were there too! These are women who I know and trust. I value their input and perspective. To honor Kara-Kae and the launch team, I adjusted my posture (and attitude) towards Mom Up and got busy reading.

AND I LOVED IT.

Motherhood is rarely Pinterest-pretty. It’s messy, chaotic, and includes cluttered play areas, piles of dirty laundry, and fingerprints on glass. But, if I’m being 100% honest, my journey to be a disciple of Jesus isn’t perfect either. Some days I accomplish a homemade dinner, read a Bible devotional to Kamden at bedtime, AND love on Husband. Other days, I forget to apply deodorant or find my keys in the ice-box. It is here – where we think we’ve failed or lost hope – that God’s grace and motherhood intersect.

One thing I admire most about Mom Up is Kara-Kae’s v u l n e r a b i l i t y to address LOTS of issues related to motherhood. She’s not afraid to admit her struggles and share the painful steps she had to take in order to escape survival and embrace THRIVING MODE. Every mom’s journey is different, but we ALL can strive to thrive.

Kara-Kae reminds readers that motherhood is a gift (what a privilege is is to raise these sons and daughters!) and a VERY important calling. As the title suggests, it’s time for us to MOM UP and claim who and whose we are! It’s time to say goodbye to survival mode and unrealistic expectations. Satan wants us to think we have to be perfect or do things a certain way, but God says we can MOM UP by seeking Him first, rejecting the world’s standards, and choosing to be the woman and mom He says we are. Doesn’t that sound so much better? I think so too!

The thing I love most about Mom Up is its focus on the greatest book ever written: the Word of God. You can read every blog post, listen to podcasts, and buy all the books, but none of them compare to Scripture. If you’ve never considered God’s Word as the best parenting advice, read Mom Up! As mothers, if we want our children to know Scripture, we must read and study The Bible ourselves. We cannot give what we do not have.

Mom Up is written for you to enjoy on your own and with a group. I suggest doing BOTH and being doubly blessed! It’s divided into five parts with 16 short chapters. Kara-Kae has graciously included the approximate time it takes to read each chapter as well as a suggested location (pantry closet with your favorite candy bar? yes please!). At the conclusion of each chapter, there is a DEEPER STUDY for Bible reading and reflection, a group DISCUSSION GUIDE, and an ACTION STEP. These sections are so important for discipleship. Plus, our faith grows when we are obedient. You can do this … you can MOM UP … I’m cheering for you!

Mom Up is for mothers (DUH!) and offers guidance on how to thrive instead of merely survive. Mom, if you read nothing else, remember this:

YOU WERE MADE FOR SO MUCH MORE!

You were created by God and He calls you His precious daughter. Your identity is not exclusive to being a wife or professional working woman or stay-at-home mom or church volunteer or small group leader or grocery-getter or lunch-packer or laundry-folder. NO! You are { insert your name here } and you can MOM UP!

Reading Mom Up is on my 2019 Reading List, I hope you’ll add it to yours too.
