30 Days of Manna // Day 28

30 Days of Manna

I have a degree in journalism and public relations with a minor in marketing, but I hate marketing. I don’t know if there is anything worse than modern promotion tricks, techniques, and ploys used by companies to encourage consumers to buy their products. You’ve seen the commercials and print ads, you know what I’m talking about!

If I drive this new car, I’ll be happy.

If I live in a bigger house, I’ll be content.

If I wear these shoes, I’ll run faster.

If I get that job, I’ll be successful.

If I wear a size 2, I’ll be satisfied.

Marketing messages to consumers say, “You are physically, emotionally, or spiritually empty and this product will make you complete.”

The comparison trap is dangerous and leads to a miserable life. It is impossible to have fulfillment in monetary or earthly possessions. Thankfully, Peter encourages Christians to be faithful, courageous, and strong among the false prophets – or, in modern terms, the marketing executives tricking us with misguided advertisements. He also provides specific instructions to believers for what they need to live a happy, genuinely fulfilled life that honors God.

Everything that goes into a life of pleasing God has been miraculously given to us by getting to know, personally and intimately, the Lord God. The best invitation we ever received! We were also given absolutely terrific promises to pass on to you—your tickets to participation in the life of God after you turned your back on a world corrupted by lust. So don’t lose a minute in building on what you’ve been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passionate patience, reverent wonder, warm friendliness, and generous love, each dimension fitting into and developing the others. With these qualities active and growing in your lives, no grass will grow under your feet, no day will pass without its reward as you mature in your experience of our Master Jesus. Without these qualities you can’t see what’s right before you, oblivious that your old sinful life has been wiped off the books. So, friends, confirm God’s invitation to you, his choice of you. Don’t put it off; do it now. Do this, and you’ll have your life on a firm footing, the streets paved and the way wide open into the eternal kingdom of our Master and Savior, Jesus Christ. ~ 2 Peter 1:3-11 (The Message)

There are two very important lessons to be learned from this passage:

one // A personal and intimate relationship with God leads to genuine fulfillment.

two // Faith develop, like regular exercise and wholesome food choices , is required for sustained health.

Peter says to build upon your faith with seven distinct qualities: good character, spiritual understanding, discipline, patience, wonder, friendliness, and generous love. You can’t have authentic faith without these virtues growing and glowing in your life.

If I am growing and glowing in God’s nature, I will thrive physically and spiritually.

Amen.
