The Year in Review | 2013

OH. MY. STARS.
If someone told me at the beginning of 2013 I’d share this annual review post while anticipating the arrival of our son, I’d have called them a big, fat liar!
Two things I know for sure: life changes in an instant and I’m blessed. =)

BLOGGERS … add your *Year In Review* post by clicking HERE or use the widget below. Don’t be shy. Visit other blogs and learn what others did in ’13!

What did you do in 2013 that you’d never done before?
I flew across the Atlantic Ocean to Tel Aviv, Israel, floated in the Dead Sea, walked the centuries-old streets of Jerusalem, and toured the Holy Land. I went to the emergency room where they told me I was pregnant and had gallstones. I rode in an ambulance. I bought an at-home pregnancy test and peed on a stick.
It hasn’t happened yet, but, I’ll give birth to Baby K. Oh-my-goodness-gracious!!!

Did you keep your new years’ resolutions?
Will you make more for next year?
I kept some 2013 resolutions while others fell by the wayside.
I’ve yet to create a list for 2014 — been a little busy, ya know.

Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes. My cousin, Lindsey, and several bloggers and Tweeps.

Did anyone close to you die?
No.

What countries did you visit?
Israel

What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
A healthy, skinnier body. Lightroom skills. Photos as a family of three. An SUV.

What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory?
May 20 — Husband took me to the ER with back and stomach pains (turned out to be gallstones) and we learned I was nearly three months pregnant. This was the same day a fatal tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Losing weight (17lbs to date) while pregnant.

What was your biggest failure?
Forgetting to take prenatal vitamins TWO days in a row and succumbing to a craving by eating a crispy chicken sandwich and fries. #dontjudgeme

Did you suffer illness or injury?
Shingles in March
Sinus infection in April
Gallstones in May
My lady parts will be “injured” in December … just saying.

What was the best thing you bought?
AHAVA products made with Dead Sea water, mud, and nutrients
Maternity jeans from Motherhood Maternity and layering tank tops from Old Navy

Whose behavior merited celebration?
Lisa got a promotion, began a photography business, and moved her blog to a dot-com.
Margaret is kicking breast cancer in the butt.
Husband for being calm, cool, and collected despite having me as his pregnant wife!
Jen for being my resource for all things pregnancy, nursing, and motherhood.

Where did most of your money go?
Groceries, bills, church tithes, Zulily, Qdoba, PayPal, and Amazon

What did you get really, really, really excited about?
We announced our pregnancy to our parents with custom onesies.

What song will always remind you of 2013?
“Roar” — Katy Perry

Compared to this time last year, are you:
Happier or sadder?
Happier
Thinner or fatter?
Thinner
Richer or poorer?
Richer … in all the ways that money can’t buy!

What do you wish you’d done more of?
Taken more photos and learned Lightroom

What do you wish you’d done less of?
Read fewer articles about child birth. ‘Nuff said.

How will you be spending Christmas?
We have no plans for Christmas since we’re waiting for Kamden’s arrival. My hope is to celebrate Christmas at home. My parents are driving down from Kentucky and Husband’s parents will visit too. It will be nice having both sets of grandparents here to spoil their grandson and help us get settled. As far as gifts, Husband and I decided to wrap Kamden in garland and ribbon, put a bow on his head, and call it a day.

Did you fall in love in 2013?
Yes, his name is Kamden and I haven’t even met him yet!

How many one-night stands?
Zero.

Who were your best friends?
K, C, T, A, D, C, S, and L.

What thing did you do that was meaningful to others?
Hosted the DFW Bloggers Spring Meet Up
Sent 155+ thank-you cards for baby shower gifts

What were your favorite TV programs?
Wheel of Fortune, Real Housewives, Top Chef, Chopped and Judge Judy

Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Hate is a strong word, but I strongly dislike our neighbors for being rude, inconsiderate, and disrespectful. The dirt bike track they constructed only added insult to injury and fuel to my hatred fire. If you look up chode in the dictionary, you’d see their face.

What was the best book you read in 2013?
Crossfire Series by Sylvia Day — think 50 Shades on steroids. Seriously! I waited six months for the third book in this erotic series and it was worth the wait. Gideon Cross is HOT. As much as I enjoy Christian Gray, Gideon Cross is better.

What was your greatest musical discovery?
Natalie Merchant — These Are The Days
I saw her in concert at Bass Hall in Fort Worth with Julie.

What did you want and get?
Le Creuset cookware and a 50mm camera lens

What did you want but did NOT get?
Full-time teaching position, MacBook Pro, and this lens

What were your favorite films this year?
Lincoln and The Butler

What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
My *DIRTY THIRTY* birthday is next week (Tuesday, Dec 17) and I have no idea what I’ll be doing. Hopefully, I’m still pregnant and waiting for my parents to arrive from Kentucky. Being an only child, I’d prefer Baby K NOT arrive on my birthday or Christmas. He needs his own day to celebrate. Guess we’ll have to wait and see!

What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
I could have done without shingles or gallstones.

What kept you sane?
Faith, family, friends, and wonderful doctors.

Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
The survivors and first responders in Moore, Oklahoma.

What political issue stirred you the most?
My cousin is currently serving in Afghanistan (Military Police, U.S. Army) and that makes me nervous about our (the United States) involvement in the Middle East as well as the wars going on there right now. I’m also flabbergasted at the website issues associated with the healthcare reform. I am a self-proclaimed Village Idiot when it comes to technology, HTML code, and the like, but you’d think a team of professionals getting paid who-knows-how-much could create a decent website.

Who do you miss?
Rev. L moved in June, fell in love, and is getting married in January!

Who are the best new persons you met this year?
Sean – Photoshop mentor
Wisam (also known as Sam) – tour guide in Israel
Whitney – birth photographer
Dorothy and Jessica – trainers at the gym
multiple Tweeps (followers on Twitter)

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013.
Pregnancy can happen when you least expect it!

Quote that sums up your year:
A baby changes everything.

What made 2013 memorable for you?

Ah! You are so early! Haha. I’ll be standing my my tradition of posting this right before my final resolution post. Got a lot of cramming to do. 😉

I love this though. I hate that you had shingles this year. They’re so awful. I’m so excited for Baby K to come though! Maybe he’ll wait until the 20th or 21st, so his bday is perfectly situated between yours and Christmas. 🙂

    • Nicole December 10, 2013 at 9:24 am - Reply

Between this link-up, preparing for Kamden, and Kamden’s pending arrival date, I didn’t want to wait too long before sharing this post. Besides, I can totally see myself in the delivery room suddenly PANIC and scream, “Oh my gosh! I forgot to publish that year in review post, somebody get me a computer ASAP!” That sounds legit, right?!?!

Dec 20 or 21 would be perfectly fine with me, c’mon Baby K, cooperate!!!!!!!!

p.s. Thank you for being AWESOME and inspiring this blog, this post, and countless others. You are the bee’s knees. =)

Emily, you are simply the best and sweetest lady ever. Thank you! I admit to reading and watching too much to the point I’ve psyched myself out, scared SHITLESS, and anxiously excited awaiting Kamden’s arrival too. I’m a hot mess! But what a blessing and a joy our bundle of joy is going to be. =)

It’s really amazing to look back on everything in a year. Sometimes we forget and it’s nice to have blog posts and photos to remind us! Thank you for putting this together! *hugs!

    • Nicole December 10, 2013 at 1:53 pm - Reply

Diane, you’re absolutely right! One of the things I love most about this questionnaire is the ability to reminisce about the past year. It’s not always pretty and rosy, but it’s good for the soul and a great reminder of how far you’ve come in 365 days! I’m thankful for folks like Y-O-U for participating and joining the fun. Big HUGS =)

“Forgetting to take prenatal vitamins TWO days in a row” If anyone judges you for that, send them over to me, I’ll have a “talk” with them. Your Christmas gift idea is perfect and we can’t wait to see pictures. If you have anonymity concerns about posting a pic of your baby on the internet, please remember that tiny baby feet photograph beautifully and are non-identifying. 🙂 Thanks so much for leading the link-up!

Awwww, thanks Skye! I’m really glad you joined the link-up party. I’ll be sharing photos very soon, as Baby Kamden is due any day now!!!! =)

I know this is last years but they are all really cool. Wow Nicole your year wasn’t good ….gallstones, sinus infection, shingles and having a baby the last part was the best thing I’m thinking. Am I right? What day did you have your little bundle of joy? He will be having his second Christmas this year and I will tell you now just in case I forget Happy Birthday for 17 December. Kamden will know a little more this year about Christmas. Happy Holidays to all of you Nicole, Jen, Lisa and Becky. I’m looking forward this new year to getting to know all of you.

    • Nicole December 4, 2014 at 2:49 am - Reply

Oh goodness, 2013 was filled with lots of emotion and surprises …. and Kamden being the best blessing of all! He arrived December 19, two days after my 30th birthday – you can read his birth story here . Having a gallstone and the shingles royally sucked, but I survived. Overall, the entire year was pretty amazing. Despite a few bumps and hiccups along the way, 2013 was an incredible and very memorable year!

p.s. Thanks for the early birthday wishes, anyone with a December birthday appreciates the acknowledgement. HA!!!!!! 🙂
