Haiti Earthquake …. two years later

Two years ago today, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked Haiti. It killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions more in a country already suffering from extreme poverty and government corruption.

Since the earthquake, United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) have been responding in a big way with their time and resources to aid recovery. As of December 2011, 223 teams, representing 2,000 volunteers, have traveled to Haiti under the direction of the Haiti Response Plan.

One hundred percent of the 223 teams have contributed full project funds, matched by the UMCOR grant, resulting in $1.5 million for labor, materials, and supplies at more than 25 project sites.

THE GOOD NEWS CONTINUES …

For 2012, there are currently 120 UMVIM teams on the Master Calendar. I will return to Haiti as co-leader of a team October 10 – 19, 2012. We will rebuild damaged infrastructure, worship with our Haitian neighbors, and deliver much-needed supplies to schools and a children’s hospital.
